REA releases a clarification note on REACH, CLP and COMAH regs based on the latest update from the HSE

REA has released a note regarding the application of REACH, CLP and COMAH regulations to digestates. To read the note, please click HERE

Defra and the HSE have seen the note and confirmed that our interpretation is correct. However, with regard to COMAH regulations interpretation is not straightforward as the HSE cannot currently provide a definitive answer on whether COMAH applies to digestates or not.

REA will continue to liaise with the HSE to clarify this matter and will keep its members updated on progress.

ORG Update

Revised EU Fertiliser Regulations could have implications for UK market for composts and digestates

Proposals for revision of the EU Fertiliser Regulations are being developed by the DG ENTR. These include draft safety and quality requirements for waste-based composts and digestates (which under the proposals would be classed as either Organics Fertilisers or Soil Improvers). Recent discussions between FEAD (the European Federation representing the European waste management industry) and the DG ENTR indicate that these may have implications for the UK market for composts and digestates, both those with product status and those with waste status.
