Scottish Seminar and Site Visit
28th May 2013 - Hilcroft Hotel, Whitburn
The Scottish Branch of the Organics Recycling Group is running a half day seminar followed by a site visit to Polkemmet Country Park. Find out the latest developments in Organics Recycling in Scotland and don't miss the opportunity to network over lunch.
Speakers include:
- Alison McKinnie from Zero Waste Scotland giving an update on ZWS activities
- Noel Whittingham, MITIE talking about The Green Kitchen (food waste recycling)
- Donald Wemyss, GP Green Recycling talking about Polkemmet and the work that was done with compost
- Paul Mathers, Terra Resource Investment Ltd on Good practice in soil manufacture
Site visit:
After lunch we will be visiting Polkemmet Country Park to see where compost has been used successfully in a number of different applications. Years of deep and open cast mining operations at Polkemmet left it with more than four million cubic metres of colliery waste, devoid of any soil and in desperate need of restoration. Transformation of the site was carried out using PAS100 quality compost, applications included compost in soxx to restore the watercourse and in the construction of the golf course.

EA releases a draft guide on fly management The EA has informed us that the ‘Working Final Draft’ of the fly management guide has now been published (link below). Whilst this document is called a Working Final Draft it will shortly be reformatted into the Environment Agency Horizontal Guidance – How to Comply with your Environmental Permit.
