Standardised Protocol for Monitoring Bioaerosols

Standardised Protocol for the Monitoring of Bioaerosolds at Open Composting Facilities (1999)

Published February 1999 - Current Version 2009

Some composting process activities result in the release of micro-organisms into the atmosphere.
Conditions currently being set in Environmental Permits specify that facility operators
must sample for these airborne micro-organisms around the site.
This Standardised Protocol has been developed to provide guidance as to how these
conditions can be met and recommends a standardised approach to sampling. It is based on
practical experience gained by the Association for Organics Recycling and has been overseen by a
committee of independent experts. The Protocol describes the equipment and materials
required, and recommends how the results should be analysed and reported
