Frequently Asked Questions about use of the AfOR's 'home compostable' certification mark
The overriding principle
The AfOR ‘Home Compostable' certification mark may only feature on those products which have successfully been certified by AfOR and its certification body and thus hold the right to use the logo.
Q1. My product is constructed from different certified materials; can I use the logo automatically?
A. No. Although the individual materials have been certified as compostable, when used to construct a product the composition will change, thus potentially affecting the way it biodegrades and disintegrates. You will need to go down the formal AfOR certification route which may require further testing to be completed before use of the logo is granted.
Q2. What does the logo's Sxxx code/number represent?
The logo's ‘Sxxx' code refers to the license holder of the certified product, they are responsible for ensuring the product complies with the requirements of the certification rules (in the case of AfOR Home Compostable, with the provisions featured in EN 13432).
Q3. Does the Sxxx code need to be displayed on the product at all times?
Yes. The product will need to display it's correct S code at all times as this allows traceability. For commercial and information purposes (i.e. flyers, posters, advertising etc) the product can be displayed without the S code.
Q4. Can I show additional information to the customer about the compostability of the product alongside the logo?
Yes, further information may be placed along with the logo but it is your duty as the license holder to make sure any claims or statements are factually correct and do not misrepresent the logo and/or product.
Q5. My product is certified as AfOR Home Compostable. Can the logo be used by those who process the product?
No, because you cannot guarantee that the processor will not change the composition of the product e.g. use a different ink. Your product, being AfOR Home Compostable certified, is no guarantee that every product into which it is incorporated complies with the requirements of the AfOR HC programme.
Q6. Can my product be certified AfOR Home Compostable if I did not manufacture it myself?
Yes, provided you conclude a model contract with the manufacturer as provided by AfOR. Further to this your company will need to appoint a member of staff who will be responsible for all your AfOR certified products.
Q7. I have been certified as AfOR Home Compostable and have received the logo in green and black & white. Can I change the colour to best suit my products design?
Yes, but there are limitations to what can be changed. In terms of the logo design you may change the size but it must still be legible i.e. clear, a readable S code. The actual design and text of the logo must not be altered in any way without prior permission from AfOR.
