Removing card from LAs' biowaste collections: householder leaflet now available

Over the last few months, the issue of ‘card' contamination has prompted a number of local authorities to remove this waste stream from organic wastes collections.

According to WRAP, 57 councils across the UK currently operate kerbside collection schemes including cardboard, but this number may well drop in the near future given the issue posed by thischallenging waste stream.

The main challenge for a Local Authority is to communicate this change of service to householders without causing a certain level of frustration. For this reason AfOR has been working with WRAP to develop a ‘change of service' leaflet that LAs can use to explain to local residents that cardboard is no longer collected with the biowaste and why removing cardboard ensures that garden waste or garden/food wastes can be turned into quality compost for a variety of uses. Poster and bin stickers are also available to LAs to use as templates.

You can download these communication tools from WRAP's Recycle Now partners' website, at the following link: http://www.recyclenowpartners.org.uk/local_authorities/download_area/garden_waste.rma

All these templates can be edited to include local service information on what residents should do with their cardboard after the service change and also to take out the section on food waste if that is not relevant to the LA's scheme.

Local Authority's designers can download the templates and customise them using the LA's local information, logos and appropriate images of caddies and bins available from the pick and mix section of Recycle Now website.

The leaflet points householders to AfOR's web site (http://organics-recycling.org.uk/consumer-guidance) for more information.
