Vince Cable praises New Earth for innovation

Business secretary Vince Cable has praised New Earth Solutions for its ‘entrepreneurial spirit’ following a visit to a demonstration gasification facility at the firm’s site in Canford, Dorset.  Dr Cable visited the site last Friday (July 13) where he viewed the New Earth Advanced Thermal (NEAT) unit. He was accompanied by New Earth’s chief executive Mark Scobie, and other directors involved in the development and roll-out of the NEAT technology.

The small-scale one megawatt renewable energy plant uses gasification and pyrolysis to turn waste-derived fuel into energy. New Earth said the facility will provide the basis of future energy projects brought forward by the company.

Commenting on the facility, Dr Cable said: "It is very encouraging to see projects such as New Earth's renewable energy recovery plant being developed. The quality of innovation I have seen here, and its future potential, provides encouraging evidence that the entrepreneurial spirit we need to rebuild and rebalance our economy is thriving in this part of Dorset.”

Technology
Feedstock for the gasification plant comes from a mechanical biological treatment plant (MBT) also situated at the Canford site. The facility mechanically sorts residual household waste and extracts recyclable metals and plastics. The organic fraction is composted and the majority of the remaining waste is turned into a refuse-derived fuel (RDF) that can be fed into the NEAT units.

The RDF is treated in the unit at a very high temperature in a controlled environment, converting it into a high-energy gas which can power a boiler and steam turbine or a gas engine, creating electricity and heat.
