Consultation on new Sustainable Development Indicators
 
A new set of Sustainable Development Indicators are being proposed in a consultation, which are intended to provide an overview of the UKs progress towards a more sustainable economy, society, and environment.  The indicators are intended to provide an overview of national progress on key issues that are important economically, socially and environmentally in the long term. They are intended to complement the National Wellbeing Measures published by the Office for National Statistics.
 

Twelve headline indicators are proposed:

 

Economy: Economic prosperity, Long-term unemployment, Poverty, & Knowledge & skills.

Society: Healthy life expectancy, Social capital, Social mobility in adulthood, & Housing provision.

Environment: Greenhouse gas emissions, Natural resource use, Wildlife and biodiversity, & Water availability.

 
There will also be 25 supplementary indicators.
 
Updates on the indicators will be published annually with a scorecard showing whether progress is in the right direction.
 
Sustainable Development Indicators and have been also widely used outside of Government by academics, non-Governmental Organisations and businesses. This consultation will give stakeholders the opportunity to comment on the choice and coverage of a new set.
 
A response to the consultation will be published by the end of December 2012 and the responses to this consultation will inform the publication of a final set of indicators in 2013.
