ORG and industry develop new guidance to unlock
potential of Separated Organic Material outputs from mixed resources
New guidance developed by the Organics Recycling Group (ORG) of the Renewable Energy Association (REA) and BioCompost Alliance sets a recognised baseline standard for the recycling of Separated Organic Material outputs from mixed resources.
The guidance, developed in partnership with environmental scientists from ADAS and welcomed by the Environment Agency, will enable investors to progress long-stalled land restoration projects looking to make use of SOMs (also known as compost like outputs-CLOs). The new guidance is called the "Separated Organic Materials (SOMs) Land Restoration End-Use StandardâÂÂ
With increased volumes of Separated Organic Materials (SOMs) being generated from Mechanical and Biological Treatment (MBT) facilities, the need to find appropriate end markets for this material in the future is essential. To assist in addressing this significant challenge, the Bio-Compost Alliance and Organics Recycling Group (previously AfOR) in conjunction with discussions with the Environment Agency have produced a Separated Organic Materials Land Restoration End-Use Standard. Meeting this standard does not guarantee that a SOM can be used on an identified land restoration site; it represents a âÂÂminimumâ standard an operator should aim to meet for their SOM. There will still be a need for operators to carry out a site specific risk assessment and assess the suitability of both the receiving land and SOM when planning to use the waste. The Environment Agency will continue to assess proposals to use SOM on a site by site basis as is undertaken now.
The Environment Agency welcome this industry led initiative and commented "this industry led initiative will be helpful in driving up the quality of SOMs proposed for use in the treatment of land to help improve an existing soil or create a new soil profile. Whilst it does not guarantee that an SOM will be suitable for the proposed use it should help reduce occasions when proposed land treatment activities are not supported by usâÂÂ
