Is yours a waste operation or an installation under the IED? New EA's guidance now available

The EA area teams are now reviewing existing waste operation permits to determine if the activities undertaken are listed within the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) and will need to be permitted in due course as an installation. This first stage of this review will be a screening exercise undertaken by EA staff with a detailed knowledge of the sites.

The EA have produced guidance for their staff to support this assessment.  This guidance is not definitive and should not be relied on in isolation.

The regulator's intention is that once this screening exercise is complete they will write directly to all potentially impacted operators towards end of March / early April formally alerting them to the requirements of IED and to the need to complete a questionnaire within a month of that letter.  Where need be, the EA area staff will provide further guidance as to the permitting choices that they might have to make.
