The ORG releases its 'feedstock quality package’ to strive for the quality of biowaste delivered to composting

The Organics Recycling Group (ORG) of REA is pleased to announce the release of its 'feedstock quality package' aimed at improving the quality of feedstocks collected and delivered to composting sites.

Local government trade bodies NAWDO and LARAC have agreed to make the package available to their members via their websites and newsletters. We also strongly advise our composter members to make the package available to their suppliers and ask that they use it in Local Authority tenders and contracts.

The package consists of:

1. A POSITION STATEMENT which outlines a range of measures that we strongly recommend compost producers and their waste suppliers take to minimise problems arising from physical contaminants in feedstock for composting.

2. An updated INPUT SPECIFICATION TEMPLATE for garden wastes and co-mingled garden/food wastes which we encourage you to use in tenders and contracts with Local Authorities. In some cases it may not be possible to use our template, however a similar one that includes the same elements should be used.

3. A VISUAL ASSESSMENT GUIDANCE that should help your site operatives to carry out visual assessments of loads of input materials delivered to the composting site and identify whether a load requires rejection or cleaning up before is shredded and composted, particularly with regard to light plastics. The limit levels in the guidance are consistent with those in the position statement.

The ORG would like to thank Gurbaksh Badhan from Buckinghamshire County Council and representative in the Biowaste Regulatory Forum for NAWDO, whose feedback was extremely important to understand NAWDO and local government’s views on this subject. We are also extremely grateful to NAWDO and LARAC for allowing the ORG to present the contents of the package at their general meetings / events.

Finally, our thanks go to our members MEC Recycling, Viridor, SITA, Envar and Novamont for the constructive feedback provided, which informed the contents of this package.

If you require any clarification, please don't hesitate to contact Kiara (kiara@r-e-a.net).
