ORG Compost Group Meeting and Site Visit

Date:  24th February 2015
Location: Arkwright Centre, Hardwick Drive, Arkwright Town, Chesterfield, Derbyshire, S44 5BS

The Organics Recycling Group of the REA invite you courtesy of SITA UK to a site visit and Members’ forum on Thursday the 24th February at the SITA Arkwright in-vessel composting facility.

ORG has for a number of years held networking events for members at a range of waste management facilities throughout the UK. These events provide an ideal opportunity for members to discuss current issues, learn about any current concerns and also visit a facility of interest.

Delegates are invited to meet at the Arkwright Centre for coffee, followed by a number of short presentations covering:
  • The Industrial Emissions Directive
  • The EU Fertiliser Regulations
  • The Landspreading and digestate storage Consultation
  • Food waste contractual incentives project - Mike Gardner, WRAP  -  Increasing the capture of food waste is considered to be instrumental if the UK is to meet the challenge of recycling 50% of the household waste stream by 2020.  At the same time, a lack of suitable feedstock to the AD and IVC industry is reported as being a major barrier threatening the financial viability of plants.   Recognising that both food waste collectors and the operators of food waste treatment plants have a shared interest in maximising the amount of food waste collected for recycling, WRAP has been assessing a number of contractual mechanisms which can be used to incentivise the collection of household food waste.  The findings from this work will be presented to the meeting and members will have an opportunity to discuss their practical implications.

After lunch and networking, the afternoon will be hosted by Sita UK, who will provide a guided tour of their composting facility, located at Deepsic Lane, near Arkwright Town, Chesterfield, S44 5DN

The Arkwright IVC facility was constructed in 2014. This is a 40, 000 tonnes per year In-vessel composting facility designed by Hytech Water with a two stage tunnel system treating comingled green and food waste to the National UK ABP standard. The complex also includes a fully enclosed maturation building with composted material stockpiled in bays using a forced aeration system. Compost is screened to produce a 25mm product which is subsequently used by local farmers and spread to land under deployments. The site employs 7 members of staff and processes the material conventionally using loading shovels, low speed mobile shredder, trommel screen and a wind sifter to remove plastic contaminants.
