Improving UK Waste Management

Thursday 12th November 2015, Central London, 08:45 - 16:00.

Overview
According to the latest Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) statistics, the UK currently recycles around 43% of its waste. The Government alongside the EU are extremely keen for the UK to move towards a more sustainable, efficient and cost effective waste management strategy and the EU has set the UK a target to recycle 50% by 2020.

The coalition government announced the October 2013 ‘Waste Management Plan for England’ which outlined how the UK can begin to move towards a zero waste economy and the vital role that local authorities will play in this through their planning strategies and local plans. Furthermore, the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) released the October 2014 ‘National Planning Policy for Waste’ which aimed to clearly outline the necessity of local authorities and the ways in which they can contribute to a more sustainable economy.

The government remains committed to increasing the amount of waste that is recycled and reducing the amount of waste in general and it is imperative that local authorities and voluntary organisations alike continue to deliver effective waste management services to ensure that the EU 2020 target is met.

Objectives
The Improving UK Waste Management forum will offer delegates a very timely opportunity to hear about the latest government strategies for how the UK can move towards a zero waste economy and increase recycling rates dramatically. Delegates will be challenged to discuss and analyse examples of best practice where local authorities have managed to adopt innovative, cost effective waste management strategies despite facing significant budget cuts in many circumstances.

Audience
Delegates who will have an interest in this event will include heads of waste policy, strategic directors, cabinet members for environment and planning, environment policy advisers, waste project managers, professors and lecturers for environmental issues, operations managers and waste minimisation officers and will be drawn from central government, local authorities, higher education and the voluntary and private sectors.
