Latest update on WT BREF review

Key environmental issues for biological treatments – No action required

Please find HERE a document that European Compost Network have produced to summarise the results of the ECN survey which you and other trade bodies’ members completed a while ago. It will be used to highlight to the JRC-IPTS which key environmental indicators should be considered for biological treatments. The document was discussed in Cologne at a ECN meeting which I attended on 8th April and has been agreed within a stakeholder coalition (ECN, EBA, EEB, FEAD and MWE). ECN will now exchange this document with the broader JRC Biological treatment subgroup. The document will be used to influence the questionnaire used for the data collation (between May – September 2014) and to inform the drafting of Chapter 3 of the WT BREF (emission and consumption levels).

BATs for outdoor composting, in-vessel composting, AD and MBT – Action required

DRAFT BATs OUTDOOR COMPOSTING
DRAFT BATs INDOOR COMPOSTING
DRAFT BATs MBT
DRAFT BATs AD

These are the draft BATS THAT ECN experts have drafted over the past weeks. They are still in a primordial form, but it is important we start gauging your views and comments on these. Please send me any comments ASAP (kiara@r-e-a.net).   Please ignore formatting and English issues for now and focus on the technical content. The BATs will inform the drafting of chapter 5 of the WT BREF.

Techniques to consider in the determination of BAT - No action required

The ECN experts have started working on the drafting of chapter 4 of the WT  BREF, which will be a list of techniques to consider in the determination of the best available techniques. This will provide a catalogue of techniques and associated monitoring used for:

— preventing emissions to air, water (including groundwater) and soil or, where this is not practicable, for reducing emissions,
— preventing or reducing waste generation.

I am in charge of drafting the techniques relevant to in-vessel composting, but I am also working closely with the other ECN experts on techniques relevant to other technologies. I will send you the drafts for comments as soon as they are ready.
Please contact Kiara at REA if you need any clarification about this process (kiara@r-e-a.net).
